Carman, Based on the Opera

Ser Serpas

Carman is based on chronological notes Serpas wrote during his undergraduate studies, from July 2013 to July 2017 on his iphone. The title Carman not only evokes Carmen, Georges Bizet’s famous opera; it’s also the name of Serpas’s dorm room during her early years at Columbia University, where she was studying studies in art and urban planning.

 

As Hannah Black notes in ‘Becoming Trash‘, Serpas’s poetry in this little book, Carman, constitutes a mythic narrative of his development as an artist.
