Screening of The Great Rock ‘n’ Roll Swindle (1980)
In 1978, facing the dawn of their self-demolition, Malcolm McLaren sought to stylise and fictionalise the rise and fall, the blaze and burn of the then indecorous, now forever notorious Sex Pistols.
Recruiting a motley team of Pistols, porn stars and train robbers, The Great Rock ’n’ Roll Swindle becomes a visual how-to, journeying through set piece acts, animation, videos and footage to uncover the truth and triumph behind the name.
Directed by Julien Temple, cinematography was composed by Adam Barker-Mill, renowned and admired for his skill in naturalistic lighting within the seminal and miscellaneous British experimentation films of the late ‘60s and ‘70s.
It is now forty-six years since the initial release, so right about time that Belmacz and Light House invite you to an evening with this inimitable Rock ’n’ Roll Swindle.
Following a screening in the Light House club room, Adam Barker-Mills will be in conversation with Adrian Dannatt as he reflects and responds to this unparalleled work and world.
Studying at the London School of Film Technique on Electric Avenue in Brixton, Adam went on to become cameraman to some of the most innovative, independent British directors of the era, shooting both Oscar winning films to politically radical footage. In 1985, Adam chose to rest this mode of light, devoting himself entirely to the sculptural light works he began in the ‘60s. The Colour Theory exhibition at Belmacz is the latest showcase of Adam’s technical though mystical interventions into such variation and viability.
Joe Corré’s Light House, formerly a derelict chandelier workshop, now a fashion house, atelier and members bar, interrupts Soho’s reduction with a redemptive attention to small designers, fetishwear designers and made to order apparel.
The screening will take place at 6:30pm on Wednesday 15th April. If you would like to attend do send an rsvp to gallery@belmacz.com. Please note space is limited.
