On Birds

A lecture performance by Gernot Wieland
followed by a conversation with art historian Martina Mazzotta

Monday 11.2.19 | 7pm

The Italian Cultural Institute in London is pleased to host the Austrian artist Gernot Wieland’s new lecture performance On Birds, an exploration of the relationship between nature psychiatry, based on research undertaken during his recent residency in Turinwith Cripta747.
Wieland (b. 1968, Horn, Austria) has been interested for many years in psychological conditions, in both human and animal subjects, as well as in the psychiatry’s relationship to nature, and its history of control and power.
Whilst in Italy, the artist learnt that in the 1970s the Psychiatric Hospital of Collegno, near Turin, was planning to present a theatrical piece, performed both by professional actors and patients, based on the film “The Birds” by Alfred Hitchcock. The play was never realised but the story, which will be part of Gernot’s new film – with the role of the characters inverted: humans attacking birds – instigates a wider investigation of interspecies power relations, fear, fascism and the patterns of bird migration.

The event will be introduced by Marco Delogu, Director of the Italian Cultural Institute, and moderated by curator Lavinia Filippi.

This event is held in collaboration with the Austrian Cultural Forum and Belmacz.
