Paul Kindersley

Drawing inspiration from the marginal to the universal Paul Kindersley has a kaleidoscopic field of vision. His videos, performances, selfies, drawings and films project the image of an artist who is tirelessly searching to satisfy his curiosity about the world he finds himself in. Showing his work liberally on social media and YouTube alongside classic gallery and museum presentations constitutes the essence of how Kindersley sees himself in relation to his audience. Between amateur and expert he attempts to create an experience for the viewer that wants to engage and compel. The constant reinvention expressed through his constructed scenarios and disguises continues the tradition of the artist as provocateur.

Whilst generously incorporating the audience into his style advice or make up tutorials ('Extreme Dream (Makeover)' at Nottingham Contemporary 2014) Kindersley feeds into the realm of multiple realities of our time.  Blurring lines and distorting hierarchies his perception gives way to sincere, playful and sharp commentary and narration. Hard to pin point Kindersley leaves his spectators guessing using the element of surprise to draw them in.

"Kindersley comically accentuates the nudity of the classical bodies, divesting them of their proverbial dignity and grace; ... private parts stand for the heroic whole." James Cahill, 2016.

"Using paint, make-up and costumes Kindersley’s work is a kind of free-access public sketchbook ... his work is an irreverent queering of British modernist tradition" The Guardian, 2017.
